How to choose a baby blanket: size, layers and safety

A blanket is the first thing most parents buy. Here's what to know.

Size by use

• 75 × 100 cm — pram & car seat.
• 100 × 140 cm — the all-rounder.
• 120 × 120 cm+ — play blanket for years.

Layers over thickness

Several thin layers beat one thick blanket — overheating is a bigger risk than cold. Quick check: feel the back of the neck.

Safety

A loose blanket doesn't belong in a sleeping newborn's cot unattended — use a swaddle or sleep bag for sleep.
